Columbia, South Carolina was founded in the late 1780s to be the capital of the newly liberated state of South Corolina. As such, it was one of the first planned metropolises in North America (most other towns formed in the 1600s and 1700s grew up organically). In the Civil War, Columbia served as critical hub for the Confederacy, and the city remains to this day deeply passionate about its Southern roots.

Columbia today, however, is much different from its Civil War era incarnation. With a metro area population of well over 700,000, the city is urbane and relatively progressive.
